Immigrate Based on Your Profession

Canada frequently targets specific occupations through Express Entry draws. If your profession is in-demand, you could be invited to apply for permanent residency with a lower CRS score.

Who This Is For

You're eligible if you:

  • Have international education or foreign work experience in an in-demand field
  • Work in healthcare, STEM, skilled trades, or other priority sectors
  • Have foreign credentials that can be assessed in Canada
  • Want to skip the study requirement and move directly to permanent residency
  • Have the language skills and education level Canada values

In-Demand Occupations

Canada regularly runs draws for these sectors:

Healthcare
  • Nurses (RN, LPN)
  • Physicians
  • Physiotherapists
  • Medical technologists
STEM
  • Software developers
  • Computer engineers
  • Data scientists
  • Systems analysts
Skilled Trades
  • Electricians
  • Plumbers
  • Welders
  • Construction managers
Other Priority
  • Chefs
  • Truck drivers
  • Teachers
  • Accounting professionals

ℹ️ In-demand fields can change. Check IRCC's Express Entry draw schedule for the latest targeted occupations.

How It Works

1

Get Your Credentials Assessed

If you studied or worked abroad, obtain an ECA (Educational Credential Assessment) and foreign credential recognition for your profession.

2

Take a Language Test

Pass IELTS, TOEFL, TEF, or CELPIP. Higher language proficiency (CLB 9+) significantly increases your CRS score.

3

Create an Express Entry Profile

Build your profile with your work experience, education, language scores, and credentials. Your CRS score is calculated automatically.

4

Wait for an Occupation-Specific Draw

When IRCC runs a draw for your occupation, eligible candidates with qualifying CRS scores are invited to apply (ITA).

5

Submit Your PR Application

After receiving an ITA, submit your full application (medical exams, security checks, background verification). Processing typically takes 6 months.

What Determines Your CRS Score?

Age

Up to 12 pts

Peak points at 25-29 years

Language Proficiency

Up to 136 pts

CLB 9+ significantly higher

Canadian Work Experience

Up to 15 pts

1+ years Canadian experience

Foreign Work Experience

Up to 10 pts

Up to 15 years counted

Education

Up to 30 pts

Bachelor's degree or higher

Provincial Nomination

+600 pts

Huge boost if nominated

Typical CRS scores for recent draws: 470-500+. Higher language proficiency and Canadian experience are key boosters.

Immigration Routes

Route 1: Express Entry (Federal Program)

Compete in federal draws where occupation matters. Your CRS score must meet the draw requirement when your occupation is targeted.

Route 2: Experience-Based PR

Get your foreign credentials recognized through provincial examination or credential assessment. Then work 2+ year, apply through Express Entry or PNP.

Route 3: Provincial Nomination

Apply directly to a province through PNP. If nominated, you get +600 CRS points and a direct path to PR without waiting for federal draws.

Minimum Requirements

  • Language proficiency: CLB 7+ (for most occupations)
  • Education: Secondary school completion minimum (Bachelor's preferred)
  • Work experience: 1+ years in your field (ideally recent)
  • Occupation in-demand: Aligned with current IRCC draws
  • Valid passport and clean background check

Why This Pathway Works

Lower CRS Threshold

Occupation-specific draws favor lower CRS scores than all-program draws.

Faster Processing

Your skills are already validated—Canada needs your profession.

No Study Required

Leverage your existing credentials and experience.

Higher Approval Rates

Targeted draws have higher approval rates since candidates match demand.
